A person stands on a hill surrounded by twisted branches, with "The Trials of Maut" written below.

THE TRIALS OF MAWT

Available on Royal Road.

It was just over three hundred years ago when an army from the jinn capital of Beit Khayal had first attempted to overthrow the gods, tired of the chief god Hadad’s neglect and his preference for humans. When news of this treachery reached Hadad, he brought destruction to the ancient city, striking down its leaders and the divisions that followed them. Enraged by this defeat, the surviving jinn of Beit Khayal who allowed their hatred to consume them fell victim to an evolutionary curse instilled upon them by Hadad which turned them into afareet, a corruption of their former selves, a message from the god as a display to all mortals of the jinn’s faltering purity. The fire that sustained them gradually turned to smoke, and the more atrocities they committed, the more their blood dwindled to nothing but vapor, their eyes settling in a shade of red.

Wandering the jinn country of the world of Balad Al Zaman a century after the High Death, Seif Abdelnour wanted nothing more than to live out the remaining seven hundred years or so of his miserable life in silence, studying the gods that had long abandoned him, trying desperately to hold onto the fire left within. Yet, an unexpected visitor from his past has other plans in mind, and Seif quickly realizes that while his own life may be out of his hands, the fate of the world rests heavily on his shoulders.

Struggling to balance the weight and justifications of atrocities for the greater good, Seif must decide if there is a line to be held as the long-separated worlds of humans, jinn, and gods come colliding together, by the very archways and portals he has pushed them through himself.
